The brain is composed of complex networks of neurons, which underlie its adaptive and versatile functionality. Recent neurotechnological developments have provided new tools for probing these networks through optogenetic perturbations, enabling investigators to go beyond observational techniques.
I present some recent theoretical and modelling work on how perturbing excitatory and inhibitory neurons can help us reveal the structure and function of cortical microcircuits. The analysis suggests that the results of perturbational interventions may not be always intuitive, given the complex network interactions, and that theory-guided perturbational analysis of brain networks is needed.
