Process models to understand mind and brain

Abstract

Process models carry out a task in the same manner we believe people do. They can capture behavior and facilitate analyses of brain measures. I'll briefly discuss using process models to help understand concept and spatial learning. Then, I will consider some key challenges, including explaining how high-level constructs in process models can be decomposed to the level of cells, offering an account of how the brain builds symbols.

In this case, the coordination problem is local. A more global problem is how multiple brain regions coordinate to support rich behaviors. To address this challenge at scale, we are pursuing a controller-peripheral approach to coordinating deep learning networks to model interactions between the ventral stream, hippocampus, and medial prefrontal cortex. Finally, I will (re)consider what it means for a model to correspond to a brain region, which is critical for both theory and data analysis, especially as the field moves toward more complex models.
